Understanding Your GPA

Unweighted vs. weighted. An unweighted GPA puts every course on the same 4.0 scale (an A is 4.0 whether it's regular or AP). A weighted GPA gives harder courses extra points — rewarding you for taking on more rigor — so it can exceed 4.0.
How the weighting works here. Honors courses add +0.5 and AP / IB / dual-enrollment courses add +1.0 to that course's grade points. This is the most common system, but schools vary — some weight differently or not at all. Check how your school calculates it.
Colleges often recalculate GPA their own way. Many admissions offices strip out weighting or use only core academic courses, so don't over-focus on a single number. What matters most is strong grades in appropriately challenging courses — see our Advanced Coursework and College Admissions toolkits.
Grade points: A/A+ = 4.0 · A− = 3.7 · B+ = 3.3 · B = 3.0 · B− = 2.7 · C+ = 2.3 · C = 2.0 · C− = 1.7 · D+ = 1.3 · D = 1.0 · D− = 0.7 · F = 0.0
