Assessment has several purposes: to guide instruction (what do students understand, and what should I do next?), to give students feedback that helps them improve, to certify learning (grades, credits), and to inform families and schools. When these purposes get tangled — when a grade tries to capture achievement, effort, behavior, and compliance all at once — assessment gets murky and less useful. The clearest through-line: assessment should serve learning first, and everything in this toolkit flows from that.

The purpose shapes the practice

A quick clarifying question to ask of any assessment or grading decision: what is this for? A quiz meant to help you adjust tomorrow's lesson (formative) should be handled very differently from a final exam meant to certify mastery (summative). A lot of grading confusion comes from mixing purposes — grading practice work as if it were a final measure, or letting behavior and effort muddy a grade that's supposed to communicate what a student has learned. Clarity of purpose is the foundation.

Formative vs. Summative Assessment

The most fundamental distinction in assessment: are you assessing for learning (to help it happen) or of learning (to measure what happened)? Both matter, and they work differently.

Formative (assessment FOR learning)
  • Ongoing, during the learning
  • Purpose: guide teaching and give feedback
  • Usually low-stakes or ungraded
  • Exit tickets, questioning, quizzes, drafts
Summative (assessment OF learning)
  • At the end of a unit or period
  • Purpose: measure and certify learning
  • Usually graded, higher-stakes
  • Tests, projects, essays, final performances
You need both — and a third: assessment AS learning

Great teaching uses formative assessment constantly to steer instruction (see our High-Impact Teaching toolkit) and summative assessment to fairly measure learning at the end. But there's a powerful third mode: assessment as learning, where students assess their own and each other's work against clear criteria — building the self-regulation skills that matter most (§17). The mistake to avoid is over-relying on high-stakes summative tests while neglecting the ongoing, low-stakes formative checks that actually move learning forward.

Designing Good Assessments

An assessment is only as useful as it is well-designed. Whether it's a quiz or a capstone project, a few principles separate assessments that reveal real learning from those that don't.

Design for validity & alignment
  • Validity — does it measure what you actually care about?
  • Alignment — does it match your objectives and standards?
  • Assess what matters most, not what's easy to score
  • Start from the goal (backward design), then build the task
Design for fairness & clarity
  • Reliability — would it give consistent results?
  • Clear instructions and expectations up front
  • Multiple ways for students to show understanding
  • Watch for barriers that hide what students know (§18)
Start with the learning, then design the assessment

The most reliable way to design good assessments is backward design: begin with what you want students to know and be able to do, decide what evidence would show they've learned it, and only then build the task and plan the teaching. This keeps assessments aligned to your real goals — rather than the trap of writing a test around what's easy to grade (recall of trivia) instead of what matters (understanding and application). Ask: 'if a student aces this, does it prove they learned what I intended?'

Formative Assessment in Practice

Formative assessment is the engine of responsive teaching — the ongoing practice of finding out what students understand and adjusting before it's too late. It's less a test than a habit.

Check understanding constantly
  • Use questioning, mini whiteboards, exit tickets
  • Sample the whole class, not just volunteers
  • Check before you move on, not after the test
  • Look for misconceptions, not just right answers
Act on what you find
  • Reteach, adjust pace, or move on — based on evidence
  • Give feedback students can act on (§06)
  • Let students see and use the information too
  • Make it routine and low-stakes
Don't wait for the test to find out they didn't get it

The heart of formative assessment: gather evidence of learning as you go and act on it immediately, rather than teaching a whole unit and only discovering at the final who understood. A quick exit ticket, a cold-call check, a mini-whiteboard question — these tell you what to do next while you can still do something about it. This overlaps with our High-Impact Teaching toolkit; here the point is that formative assessment is assessment at its most useful, because it changes learning while it's still happening.

Feedback That Moves Learning

Feedback is among the most powerful influences on learning — and one of the hardest to get right. Done well it accelerates learning; done poorly it does nothing, or even harms.

Make feedback work
  • Tell students what to do next — make it actionable
  • Focus on the task and the work, not the person
  • Be timely and specific; tie it to the criteria
  • It should make the student think and act
Avoid the traps
  • Grades kill comments — students ignore feedback beside a mark
  • Don't grade everything — feedback isn't a marking marathon
  • Skip vague praise ('good job') — it doesn't improve work
  • Ego feedback (vs. peers) is worse than task feedback
The paradox: comments alone often beat grades + comments

A classic finding (Butler & Nisan, and central to Dylan Wiliam's work): when students receive a grade and a comment, most read only the grade and ignore the comment — so comment-only feedback on formative work often improves learning more than a grade with feedback attached. The wider principle: feedback only works if it changes what the student does, so it must be specific, actionable, and require them to do something. Aim for less, better feedback — 'more work for the recipient than the donor.'

Rubrics & Success Criteria

Clear criteria are the backbone of fair, useful assessment. When students know exactly what good work looks like, they can aim for it — and you can grade more consistently.

Choose the right rubric
  • Analytic — scores several dimensions separately

Try a single-point rubric

A single-point rubric — which describes only what proficient work looks like, with blank space to note where a student exceeded or fell short — is often clearer and faster than a traditional grid full of boxes, and it gives more useful, personalized feedback. Whatever format you use, the key is sharing criteria (and models) with students up front: research is clear that students learn and perform better when they understand what success looks like before they begin, not just after they're graded. The Trouble With Traditional Grading

Here begins the most debated part of teaching. Traditional grading has real, well-documented problems — worth understanding whether or not you choose to change your practice.

What grades often conflate
  • Achievement mixed with effort, behavior & compliance
  • 'Points' for homework, participation, turning things in on time
  • The result: a grade that's hard to interpret
  • Two students with the same grade can know very different things
Deeper problems
  • Inconsistency — no two teachers grade the same
  • Averaging can punish early struggle
  • Zeros can distort a grade far beyond the missed work
  • Bias can creep into subjective judgments
Grades are supposed to mean something — but often don't

The core critique of traditional grading is that a single letter or percentage tries to do too much — blending what a student learned with how they behaved, how hard they tried, and whether they turned things in on time — so the grade ends up communicating little clearly. Add in wide teacher-to-teacher variation, the mathematical quirks of averaging and zeros, and the risk of unconscious bias, and grades can be less accurate and fair than we assume. Naming these problems is the starting point for the reform debates that follow — on which reasonable educators genuinely disagree.

What Grades Are (and Aren’t) For

Much of the grading debate comes down to one question: what is a grade actually for? Getting clear on that helps you make deliberate choices about your own practice.

A grade is meant to...
  • Communicate what a student knows and can do
  • Be accurate — reflect actual learning
  • Help students, families & schools understand progress
  • Be as consistent and fair as possible
A grade isn't meant to...
  • Be a reward or punishment for compliance
  • Be a proxy for how much a teacher 'likes' effort
  • Mix behavior and achievement into one murky number
  • Be a weapon or a bribe
Consider separating achievement from behavior

One idea most grading experts (across the debate) agree on: it's clearer to report achievement and behavior separately rather than blending them into one grade. A student's mastery of the content and their work habits (effort, timeliness, participation) are both worth communicating — but combining them hides both. Many schools now report academic grades alongside separate marks for 'learning behaviors,' so families can see both clearly. However you grade, knowing what you want the grade to mean is the first step.

Standards-Based Grading

One major approach to grading reform is standards-based grading (SBG) — grading against specific learning standards rather than accumulating points. Here's what it is, and the case for and against.

What SBG is
  • Grade against learning standards, not points earned
  • Report proficiency by standard or skill
  • Focus on current mastery and recent evidence
  • Separate academic proficiency from behavior
The debate
  • For: more accurate, clearer picture of what students know
  • For: focuses students on learning, not point-hunting
  • Against: hard to implement; transition confuses families
  • Against: can generate lots of data; not a cure-all
A clearer picture — with real implementation challenges

Advocates argue standards-based grading gives a more accurate, useful picture: instead of a blended percentage, you see how a student is doing on each standard, based on their most recent, best evidence of mastery. Done well, it can shift students from chasing points to focusing on learning. Critics and practitioners note the challenges are real too — it's demanding to implement, the transition confuses students and families used to letters and GPAs, and it's 'closer to traditional grading than many think.' It's a serious approach worth understanding, not a magic fix.

Grading for Equity: The Debate

The most heated grading debate centers on 'grading for equity,' associated with Joe Feldman's influential book. It's genuinely contested — here are its ideas, the case for, and the pushback, fairly.

  • Accurate — grades reflect actual learning
  • Bias-resistant — minimize subjectivity & inequity
  • Motivational — support learning, not just sort students
  • Practices: no zeros, retakes, don't grade behavior/homework
The debate, fairly
  • For: some studies link it to fewer failures & less grade inflation
  • For: aims to reduce bias against underserved students
  • Against: many teachers report students game it or 'coast'
  • Against: critics cite weak peer-reviewed evidence & 'lowered standards'
A real debate — decide with your eyes open

Grading-for-equity practices — not penalizing behavior, allowing retakes, avoiding zeros, focusing on mastery — are promoted as making grades more accurate and fair, and some district evaluations report fewer D/F grades and reduced grade inflation. But the pushback is substantial and worth taking seriously: in one survey of over a thousand teachers, most disliked the specific 'controversial' policies, citing students who game the system or coast; critics argue the research base is thin and that some practices risk lowering standards or removing accountability. Advocates dispute these characterizations. There is no settled consensus — a thoughtful teacher can land in different places. Weigh the ideas against your students and context.

The Zero & Averaging Debate

No grading topic is more argued than zeros and averaging. The math is real — and so are the concerns on both sides. Here's the honest picture.

The case for change
  • On a 0–100 scale, F spans 60 points; each passing grade only 10
  • A single zero can sink an average far beyond the missed work
  • One missed assignment ≠ knowing nothing
  • Alternatives: a 50% floor, a 0–4 scale, or mastery-based grading
The concerns
  • 'Do nothing, still get 50%' can invite coasting
  • Some students learn to game minimum grading
  • Deadlines and accountability matter in life
  • Averaging isn't the only issue — what we average is
The math is real — and so is the worry about gaming

The mathematical critique is hard to dismiss: on a 100-point scale, the F range (0–59) is six times wider than any passing band, so a single zero devastates an average in a way that doesn't reflect what a student actually knows — which is why some teachers use a 50% floor, a 0–4 scale, or grade by mastery instead. But the counter-concern is equally real: teachers worry that 'you get 50% for nothing' teaches students they can coast, and that removing consequences removes accountability. Both point at something true. Many teachers find a middle path — using more proportional scales while still requiring students to complete essential work. Choose deliberately.

Retakes, Redos & Late Work

Should students be able to retake assessments and turn work in late without penalty? These policies flow from the same debate — with thoughtful arguments on each side.

The case for flexibility
  • Learning is the goal — mastery matters more than timing
  • 'In the real world, retakes are often available — you just ask'
  • Late penalties mix behavior into an achievement grade
  • A grade should reflect what a student can do now
The case for structure
  • Deadlines and follow-through are real-life skills
  • Unlimited retakes can overwhelm teachers & invite gaming
  • Some students delay everything without deadlines
  • Balance flexibility with reasonable limits & expectations
Flexibility that supports learning — without inviting gaming

The argument for retakes and redos is sound: if the goal is learning, a student who masters material after a second attempt has still learned it, and penalizing that (or blending lateness into an achievement grade) muddies what the grade means. But teachers rightly worry about the workload of unlimited retakes and about students who exploit no-consequence policies. Many land on a reasonable middle: allow retakes and redos (often requiring the student to do some additional work first to earn them), with sensible limits — capturing the learning benefit while keeping accountability and protecting your time.

Grading Homework, Practice & Extra Credit

A specific, high-stakes question: should you grade homework and practice work? The distinction between practice and assessment is the key.

Practice isn't assessment
  • Homework is usually practice — where mistakes should be safe
  • Grading practice can punish the learning process
  • It also rewards home advantage, not just learning (§18)
  • Consider homework for feedback & completion, not the grade
Handle extras carefully
  • Extra credit can distort a grade's accuracy
  • Beware credit for supplies, permission slips, or attendance
  • Keep the grade about learning, not compliance
  • Report effort and habits separately (§09)
Let practice be practice

There's a strong case that homework and other practice work shouldn't weigh heavily in a grade — because practice is exactly where students should be making mistakes and learning, and grading it punishes that, while also advantaging students with more support and resources at home. Using homework formatively (for feedback and to check understanding) rather than as a big chunk of the grade keeps the grade focused on actual learning. Reducing the Grading Burden

Grading is a leading cause of teacher overwork — and much of it doesn't improve learning. Working smarter here protects both your students' learning and your own wellbeing.

Grade less, better
  • You don't have to grade everything
  • Not every task needs a mark — much can be feedback-only
  • Use comment-only feedback on formative work (§06)
  • Focus deep feedback where it matters most
Work efficiently
  • Whole-class feedback on common errors saves hours
  • Self- and peer-assessment (§17) build skills and save time
  • Use rubrics and exemplars to grade faster & fairer
  • Don't carry 30 books home — check in class
Grading everything is neither necessary nor helpful

A quiet driver of teacher burnout is the belief that every piece of student work must be collected, marked, and graded — but the research doesn't support it, and it's not sustainable. Much practice work is better handled with quick, whole-class feedback on common errors, or with students checking their own work against criteria. Reserve your limited, precious deep-feedback energy for the work where it truly moves learning. Grading smarter isn't cutting corners — it's focusing effort where it counts. Assessment in the AI Era

Generative AI has upended assessment almost overnight — over half of teens now use it for schoolwork. The hard truth: you can't detect your way out of this, but you can design better assessments.

Why detection fails
  • AI-detection tools are unreliable — many false positives
  • They misflag non-native English writers especially
  • OpenAI shut down its own detector for low accuracy
  • Major universities advise against relying on them
Design for the AI era
  • Redesign tasks: personal voice, real-time, process-based
  • Value drafts and process, not just the final product
  • Use in-class writing and oral checks where it matters
  • Teach responsible AI use (see our AI in the Classroom toolkit)
It may be the assignment, not the AI

The most useful reframe of the AI-and-cheating panic: when a task can be completed by AI without a student engaging in the intended learning, AI simply reveals that the assessment was a weak proxy for learning in the first place. Because detection is unreliable (and can manufacture false accusations that erode trust), the productive response is to redesign assessment — toward personal context, documented process, drafts, real-time demonstration, and oral checks. One honest caveat: even 'authentic' tasks aren't fully AI-proof (AI can produce convincing reflections and projects), so use layers, and authenticate work through your knowledge of your students — not a detector.

Involving Students: Self & Peer Assessment

Some of the most powerful assessment happens when students assess — turning them from passive recipients of grades into active partners in learning. This is 'assessment as learning.'

  • Students judge their own work against clear criteria
  • Builds metacognition and self-regulation (high-impact)
  • Helps them internalize what quality looks like
  • Turns them into owners of their learning
Peer assessment
  • Students give each other structured feedback
  • They learn by evaluating against the criteria
  • It lightens your load and deepens understanding
  • Teach and model it — it's a skill to build
Students who can assess their own work learn more

Two of Dylan Wiliam's five key formative strategies are activating students as owners of their own learning and as resources for one another — and for good reason. When students learn to judge their own and each other's work against clear success criteria, they build the self-regulation that most predicts long-term success, internalize what quality looks like, and get far more feedback than any one teacher could provide. Teach the criteria, model the process, and gradually hand over the evaluating. It develops learners and saves you time.

Equity & Fairness in Assessment

Assessment can either reveal what every student truly knows — or quietly advantage some over others. Fair assessment is about measuring learning, not privilege or circumstance.

Guard against unfairness
  • Watch for bias in subjective grading (use rubrics & criteria)
  • Don't let home resources determine grades (§14)
  • Provide accommodations so tests measure learning, not disability
  • Remove barriers that hide what students know
Assess fairly

Fair assessment measures learning — not circumstances

An assessment is unfair when it measures something other than what a student has learned — home support, access to technology, test-taking speed, language background, or how well their work happens to match a teacher's unstated preferences. The equity goal is to make assessment reveal genuine understanding for every student: use clear criteria and rubrics to reduce bias, provide accommodations and multiple ways to show learning, keep grades about achievement rather than compliance, and watch for barriers. For Leaders: Grading Policy & Reform

Grading is often set at the school or district level — and grading reform is one of the most sensitive changes a leader can attempt. The evidence points to leading it carefully, not by decree.

Lead grading well
  • Ground policy in the purpose of grading (§09)
  • Build genuine teacher understanding and buy-in
  • Communicate clearly with families early and often
  • Pilot and evaluate before mandating
Avoid the traps
  • Don't mandate contested practices without support
  • Don't move faster than teachers or families can follow
  • Don't ignore the real debate — engage it honestly
  • Beware mischaracterization ('lowering standards') — communicate carefully
Grading reform fails when it's mandated, not built

History is full of grading reforms that collapsed under backlash — not always because the ideas were wrong, but because they were imposed too fast, without teacher buy-in or clear communication with families, and were then mischaracterized in the media as 'lowering standards.' If you're pursuing grading reform, treat it as long-term, participatory culture change: engage teachers in understanding the why, pilot and evaluate, bring families along, and be honest that reasonable educators disagree.
